Man City retain Premier League title

Man City’s 14th consecutive win seals the first back-to-back title since 2009

There were no last-minute fireworks as Man City won the Premier League title for the fourth time with a 4-1 win against Brighton. In a thrilling title race, top spot changed hands 32 times in total and Man City clawed back a 7-point deficit from January when Liverpool was ahead.

Man City finished on 98 points with a positive goal difference of a whopping 72 goals. Liverpool finished just one point behind on 97 points, enough to win the league every other previous season but this year and lasts.

After this week’s events and the heroics of Tottenham and Liverpool in the Champions League, this was one ask too much for a Liverpool team who have scored the most amount of points ever for a second place finish.

Liverpool themselves managed to win 2-0 against Wolves, with two goals for Sadio Mane to help him draw level and share the Golden Boot with teammate Mo Salah and Patrick Aubameyang of Arsenal. However, on the day, Man City once again showed why they are champions with a stylish win on the last day of the season, coming from behind to score four goals.

Elsewhere, Chelsea sealed third place with a 0-0 draw away to Leicester and Tottenham held on to the fourth spot with a 2-2 draw at Everton. Arsenal beat Burnley to finish fifth and Man Utd’s dismal form continued when they lost 2-0 to an already relegated Cardiff.

Pep Guardiola became just the third manager to win back-to-back Premier League titles joining Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, and Pep has the chance to become the first ever manager to win a domestic treble when they face Watford in the FA Cup final this Saturday, having already won the Carabao Cup against Chelsea in February.

Man City equalled another record this season with 32 wins out of 38 and became the first team since Preston North End to claim at least one victory against every side they have faced in two consecutive seasons.

Both Man City and Liverpool have one more game left; Man City in the FA Cup Final and Liverpool will hope to win Jurgen Klopp’s first trophy as manager when they face Tottenham in the Champions League final on 1st June.

Both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will have busy summers ahead of them as they bring in new recruits hoping to build on this season. Elsewhere, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must deal with a lack of Champions League football for Man Utd next season during the summer transfer window, while Chelsea and Tottenham try to hold on to their star players.

The transfer window opens on 16th May this year and ends earlier again than the rest of Europe on 8th August.
