With schools going back soon, it can be a nervous time for you and your child. However, there are steps you can take to make the process run smoothly for you both
If, on the first day of school, you are running around unorganised, you are not starting the day in the calm and relaxed manner that your child needs. They need your support on this day and probably a little extra hand-holding; so, make the school lunches the night before, pack the bags early and get the school clothes ready for the morning. Make sure your child knows where everything is in their bag too, so they don’t panic thinking they have forgotten to pack something.
Let them be themselves
On the build-up to the first day, let your child pick their backpack, pencil case and lunchbox. This is something they will take into school with them and will show off their personality. You are not going to school, your child is, so no matter how much you like the Mickey Mouse lunchbox, your child may not.
Letting them choose their school equipment is a big step. A child who is happy to be themselves and comfortable with their likes and dislikes, will be more relaxed when it comes to making new friends.
Don’t make a big deal out of it
Yes, it may be a big deal, but by not making a big deal out of it in front of your child, they will naturally be more relaxed. A child can pick up on their parents’ mood, so if you are relaxed and positive about their first day at school, then your child is likely to be equally relaxed. Gushing and taking photos of your children in their uniform on their first day is normal, but it can also add an extra layer of stress. Wait till the end of the first day before taking those proud parent photos.
Do a trial school run
Sounds silly, but if you haven’t done a school run before, you really won’t understand why it’s such a big deal until they are a daily occurrence! Plan out the quickest and safest journey to school and do a trial run. The last thing your child needs on their first day of school is to be late.
Tell them to have fun
It is a big day, however, don’t add pressure to what can already be a stressful day. Tell them to relax and have fun. Let them make up their own mind about their classmates, teachers and their new setting. And at the end of the day try not to bombard them with 101 questions! It’s a lot for them to take in and is a big change to their daily routine, so they may be more tired than usual – but don’t get too excited, it doesn’t last!
